Local Waterways The Stanley Arms are proud to be a part of the local waterway heritage. Lord Stanley was a local landowner and would have most certainly sold part of his land to Josiah Wedgewood and the traders and merchants of Liverpool when they built the Trent and Mersey Canal in 1777. The Anderton Basin, which the Pub and Restaurant now overlooks, was also part of Lord Stanley’s estate. For nearly two hundred years The Stanley Arms would have served the working boatmen – especially those that were bringing their cargoes to the Lift. Today, sitting in the pub’s garden, it is easy to imagine the scene. The red, green and gold of the Mersey, Weaver and Ship Canal Carrying Company boats ; the black and yellow of the old established Anderton Company; the shadowy black Lift ; the lights, steam and smoke shrouding the chemical company a few hundred yards away. Although the Working boatmen have now disappeared, The Stanley Arms Pub and Restaurant still retains that waterways atmosphere. It a great place to stop off when walking, cycling and cruising the canals. |
